Romero’s Las Brazas

80. Romero’s Las Brazas
This colorful, genteel family-owned restaurant on the northwest side dispenses Mexican food with personality, including some dishes rarely found on the local scene. Their Pambazo Chilango, a baroque torta brushed with red salsa and filled with chorizo and potato, merits a spot on Houston’s Sandwich Hall of Fame. Enchiladas Teresitas combine that same frisky chorizo-and-potato filling with a subtle guacamole salsa. Even the breakfast chilaquiles are eventful with their dusky red salsa and their sunnyside egg on top. Basics from nachos compuestos to tortilla soup and elegant, slender flautas are deftly handled. And the snapper mojo de ajo would do honor to far pricier places. Low-key live Mexican music at night is a treat, with no tableside trolling for tips.
