76. Radical Eats
Cross a 1960s hippie commune mess hall with a small-town Texas cafe and you’ve got scruffy little upstart Radical Eats, where vegan food finds a particularly Houstonian expression. The small menu’s mostly Mexican with the Asian touches that weave through so much of our food life lately. “Thai-male,” anyone? And the flavors are positively joyful. Who knew that rolling pan-sauteed greens into a tomatillo-sauced enchilada could work so well? Or that you could fashion a lilting “Dreamsicle” horchata out of gentle rice milk mixed with local orange juice? The Sunday brunch buffet is a Mad Hatter’s surprise party, and don’t leave without some of the clever tamales, which are best when freshly made.
