66. Villa Arcos
There’s no air conditioning. No real tableware. And until recently at this 33-year-old East End taqueria, it was cash only. None of which has kept Villa Arcos from acquiring a loyal cult of regulars and a meet-and-greet cachet among politicos. The lure is the thick, pillowy house-made flour tortillas with soulful fillings, including the landmark Velia Burrito — a simple Tex-Mex poem of refried beans, cheese and chile con carne. The Bacon Super Taco, with scrambled egg and potato and cheese, is a monument to the genre. When the weekend chicharrones are on, they’re a porky crackle of mind-expansion. And the Tex-Mex combo plates are proudly, comfortingly retrograde. Dena Gutierres and family run one of those great everyday restaurants that makes Houston go ’round.
