65. Frenchy’s Chicken
The original Creole chicken shack on Scott is resolutely unlovely, and the counter ladies brook no dithering. But there’s a reason folks from nearby University of Houston, TSU and beyond line up patiently to chow down in such cheerless surroundings. That would be the landmark fried chicken seasoned with a red-peppery Creole kick, along with such classic sides as the sausage-gigged red beans and rice, the pleasantly bitter collard greens in a meaty pot liquor and spunky dirty rice. Oh yes, and buttermilk biscuits to seal the deal. Accept no substitutes: the mothership location is the one true shrine, not the satellite siblings.
