Vieng Thai

31. Vieng Thai
There’s a reason chefs and wine professionals dote on this unpretentious Thai restaurant on a scruffy stretch of Long Point. The flavors are exhilarating, it’s BYOB and the price is right. Plus there’s a quirky charm to the provincial-Thai living room atmosphere that may lead to sudden outbursts of karaoke. Tell them you want “Thai spicy” and your food won’t be watered down to suit Western tastes. Among the highlights are the e-sarn sausage appetizer, the wild-and-woolly green-papaya salad or the panang red curry with chicken. The homely frizzled omelet stuffed with ground pork and herbs is a dish somebody’s Thai mom might fix you. And each of the lime-dressed salad dishes has its own appeal. (I am most partial to the calamari version.) Of all the Thai restaurants I’ve been to in Houston over the years, this is the one that reminds me most of the food I ate during a one-month visit to Thailand.
