16. Philippe Restaurant + Lounge
It’s fun having a chic, accomplished French restaurant in town for a change. Chef Philippe Schmit is clearly having fun with his handsome young project, too: witness the sly duck-confit tamales on his menu (como no?); the inventive use of fresh herbs; the recurrent North African flavors; the Houston-friendly sunbursts of harissa or espelette pepper. Lots of suave service, striking black-and-white architectural graphics and an interesting wine list superintended by Vanessa Trevino Boyd make a visit here feel special, even if you’re just in for a quick bowl of onion soup rather than a big-deal hay-smoked fish in a gloss of red wine sauce subtly spiced with star anise.
